queer.salam.cologne - we are there
There is a new initiative from the gay and lesbian community around Cologne for Gay and Lesbian refugees.
The idea was born during the time when some volunteers welcomed and cared for the arriving refugees at the “Drehscheibe Airport Cologne-Bonn”.
Salam … has many meanings in Arabic.
Salam means „Peace“ and „Be Safe“, but is also particularly a traditional greeting among Muslims around the world. „Salam“ is commonly used when dealing with the family or friends, just with people with whom you can talk to informally.
Since 2015 many refugees have arrived, the majority fleeing from their Arab region to Germany, in particular North Rhine-Westphalia and Cologne. We surmise from the quantity of refugees that have arrived in Germany, there is an unknown amount of gay and lesbian refugees there within. An „Outing“ is often associated with many problems inside their culture, so many gays and lesbians are in fear and continue to keep silent.
